  • September 7

The day of the anniversary of the 179th year of independence of the people and this great piece of land, which was ruled by Portugal from 1500 to 1822.

Unlike other areas of South America, the region now known as Brazil was colonized by the Portuguese in 1500 led by explorer Pedro Alvares Cabral. On this day in 1822, the son of Portugal’s king, and regent of Brazil, declared Brazil independent of Portugal and himself Emporer Pedro I. He was succeeded by his son Pedro II in 1831, who until his death in 1889 led the developement of Brazil as a modern nation.

What makes Brazil great is not just its people, its church, and its carnival. It also has has a great landscape, which produces what most people on earth likes, you guess it: coffee. Brazil has been for a long time the world first producer of coffee, averaging 26% of the world harvest of delicious strong flavor coffee that Brazilians religiously drink after each meal. Besides coffee and cocoa, it produces a great deal of tropical fruits, such as: papayas, pineapple, watermelon, bananas, mangos, a variety of vegetables, corns, beans, sugar cane. Its sea coast and rivers harbors a large variety of tasty tropical fish, not to forget the unique to Brazil, the sweet water pink dolphin and much more.

People take their church activity seriously, which is often coupled with civic duty. Meanwhile Soccer is by far he greatest Brazilian pass time and national sport. Soccer volleyball played bare foot on the beach, is on the rise and is often seen played by mix team of men and women. Brazilian music and their Samba dance is known and recognized as a great mood unifier, with its repetitive set of lateral steps that can keep even the oldest of us in good physical shape. Call their dance Brazilian aerobic if you wish.

There is much to be said of this great (in all meanings) and intriguing place. But not only Sptember 7 is its Independence day… It is my birthday too. I have just decided to visit Rio de Janeiro, and I guess that is more than a birthday gift for a lady who has lived for almost a quarter of century.

It has being a sunny tropical winter so far ( el niño? la niña? ok, blame los muchachos..hahaha!) but I think I have to agree that this weather will make my Rio tour much more that exciting! Hope it makes me forget my age!

    You guys take care!

    Have a great weekend! k.i.s.s.

  • Xanga Babylon

You want to hear something personal? I´m looking for language classes. Reason? I want to. And I do hope that in a near future, I will really need to use it. Maybe in Europe?

Anyway, I have read lots of blogs lately and have noticed the large range of language usage.

No, I´m not even mentioning I will learn French and Italian because of Xanga. First because  some of my friends ( Nala and carlo- ti amo you guys!) take the good care of putting all the stuff they write into English…whew! But anyway.. As we use language to get to know people.. Then why not master it? Them?

You guys take care and remember: K.I S.S.

ps. Just hope my indian friends dont start writing in.. Hindi for instance…

  • World Music…

My passion for music is old. I remember myself at 7 listening to Nika Costa and some old traditional Breazilian music. I know it is old because when I mention some singers and groups I used to enjoy to my teenage students, there is always a question mark on their faces.

I have always listened to everything, but I must confess there is a special preference for what now a days is called ‘new age’ or ‘world music’.

I´m not the right one to describe these terms, but surelly I can mention some good artists as; Enya, Loreena Mckennitt, Clannad, Deep Forest, Enigma, Peter Ratzembeck, Dead Can Dance, Cocktail Twins…and others…

There are some Brazilian who make some good world music too. Allow me to introduce you some of them…Some I enjoy listening to.

Fortuna   Singer and composer, she has jewish origings. She sings old traditional songs in Ladino (the old hebrew spoken in the Iberian Paninsula. More information can be found on her site where there is a link for English readers. http://www.fortunamusic.net/

Marcus Viana   Son of another great musician, Sebastião Viana, Marcus is a well known Brazilian violin player. He has made soundtracks to tv series, theater, films, and also soundtrack for tv and radio commercials. On his site one can also hear some of the cd tracks. Enjoy!http://www.sonhosesons.com.br

Bossa Nova Delhi  This is actually the name of Ana Simonka´s cd.  It is an amazing connection of Brazilian music Bossa Nova, and traditional Indian music. “From Mantra to Samba” as it is described on the site. Unfortunately, just for Portuguese readers…http://www.artesimbolo.com.br

it is also possible to get some more information here…some in English    http://www.artesimbolo.com.br/Bossa_Nova_Delhi/imprensa.htm

You guys have fun and also a nice week!

  • Timeless…

I have got almost no time to blog, but I have to thank you all for the attention, comments and props!!

Meanwhile, here´s something I found and hope it adds anything…if it doesn´t, hope my ‘have a nice weekend ‘ wish makes any difference….

What I have in my hands..

Buddha got together with his disciples and showed them a Lotus flower, simble of purity, because it grows  immaculate in swampy waters.

” I want you to tell me something about what i have in hands.”

The first made a whole speech on the importance of flowers.

The second composed a beautiful poem on its petals.

The third invented a parable using the flower as an example.

Then its Mahakashyap´s turn. He got next to Buddha, smelled the flower and carressed his face with one of the petals.

” It is a Lotus , simple and beautiful, as everything that comes from God.”, Mahakashyap  said.

“You were the only one who saw what I have in my hands.”, that was Buddha´s comment.

    Peace to you all.
