  • A visit to the Sao Bento monastery is good for the eyes, the stomach and mainly for the heart.

It´s almost a quarter to noon. On Sao Bento Plaza, there is much heat, buses and motorbikes noise, and people walking in a frenetic pace. It seems impossible, but next to this same agitated scene, there is a calm place.

Everyday, at 11:45 sharp, the monks of Sao Bento Monastery get together in the Basilica of Nossa Senhora da Assunção (popularly known as São Bento Monastery) to celebrate the Meridian Hour.

One who visits the place at that time, hardly believes in what one sees. Right after the bells ring, silence is only broken  by the prayers sung in Latin. After making one of the many daily tasks, the monks leave in silence.

The tranquility is only one of the pleasant features of the place. And, even if one is not a very religious person, one may find good reasons to visit it. The Monastery is also stage of many cultural events throughout the year.

Some visitors get a little bothered by the lack of illumination. But during the early masses, mainly on sunny days, the place seems ethereal. The altar gains a golden colour…torches of light coming from outside cross the entire ambient.

Sometimes I like going there after lunch time. I sit, and I observe the liturgical scenes painted on the ceiling and walls. After being there for some time, I pay a visit to the Monastery little store. Among the religious books, images, and medals, there are some sorts of bread and cakes made by the monks. They go very well with some coffee and tea later in the afternoon….

Have a nice week, you all!!

Peaceful, that’s the great thing of the churches/monasteries,somewhere to have peace in a crazy world. The places make you feel you are in a place before being born.

  • Thank Shy to show us this . In France also there are again some famous monasteries like Sao bento where monks sing offices with gregorain songs.

  • Wow… it sounds like a truly amazing and peaceful place … you’re blessed to be able to spend time there at whim!!!

  • “Ethereal” – what a great choice of words. I’ve never used it but one could not describe what you have with a more explicit adjective. It, the monastery, is on my list.

  • That’s wonderful! *sighs wistfully* I wish we had places like that to go to here.

  • Very lovely.

  • São Bento is the name of my hometown (in Santa Catarina state) in which I lived for only four years, a small an peacefull site, where I’d probably get crazy if I had to live there nowadays, hehe. I just can’t imagine myself living in such a small town. hehe

  • Sounds like a wonderful place to visit. It’s a shame there are not more places like it in the world.

  • This is so beautiful and majestic.

  • Amazing.. I love looking at the interior design of large churches.. My brother just moved to Koln, Germany and has a huge cathedral in the city centre.. it is also truly amazing to look at.. I am not religious, but I do enjoy the serenity of beautiful places though!

  • Definetly beautiful and peaceful..

  • I love some monasteries. There is one near Lisbon in Portugal and another on the Danube somewhere near Salzburg or Vienna, I think it was at Melk. Cheers Portia

  • You made me want to experience that myself.. be transported there today at noon. I’m glad this is something you were able to describe so beautifully — and so well that I saw and heard it.
